Being an out and out fruit bat, one of my biggest dreads when embarking on holidays to off-the-beaten-track locations is the fear of being stranded without any fresh fruit! Fortunately, our holidays to Mozambique hold no such fears! Pomene is my ultimate slice of tropical fruit paradise!

In the heart (and heat) of summer, we see mango-laden trees glistening green and gold on the road side, pawpaw trees that grow tall in the back gardens of the local village, ready for the picking on a whim, granadilla trellises trailing over the palm-leaf-plaited shelters, and regal-looking crowns of ‘wild finger’ bananas perched on the myriad of banana tree thrones.  And don’t forget the coconuts! If only our machete skills were up to scratch, we’d have taken greater advantage of this stubbornly impermeable tropical favourite!

Each morning, in sufficient time before breakfast, the friendly women from the surrounding villages bring along what we have come to know as the ‘daily travelling fruit shop’. We buy fruit to load the wooden fruit bowl, and in no time at all, someone would have whipped up the most delicious fruit salad ever. Our amazingly creative daughter Jax would toss in some freshly chopped coconut flesh to enhance the exoticness of our healthy kick-start to the day!

Something made me wonder why such a simple and uncomplicated bowl of fruit could be SO darn delicious?  And seemingly more so than any other? Then it occurred to me that, just maybe, God made it that way.....that whatever we find just where we are always mixes together beautifully! No imports needed!

So, the next time we’re planning a trip up there, I know I can strike fruit off my holiday grocery list! I’ll put my faith in the daily travelling fruit shop!

Ngelinye ilanga uma wenza isaladi lezithelo, zama ukuhlanganisa lokhu okulandelayouma ukwaziukuthola umlingo wezithelo zehlobo.

Tips

  1. Optionally of course, and depending on availability, but the addition of some fresh coconut flesh, pried out of its shell, chopped and sprinkled on top adds some contrast of colour and texture!
  2. Mangoes can be difficult to cube. Unpeeled, I slice off both cheeks of the mango as close to the pip as possible. With a sharp knife, score into cubes across and down the cheek to skin deep. Scoop out the cubes with a dessert spoon. Peel the left-over skin off the pip, slice down the side into 2 strips and cube. Simpler still, just suck the remainder of the flesh off the pip - a deliciously yummy, juicy, messy, bad mannered, hand to mouth affair!
