Kanti nginesitsha esigcwele ama-Meringues enziwe ngoketshezi olumhlophe lweqanda elasala emva kokuthi uSisi Bongi etshengise ukwenziwa kwe-Portuguese Custard Tartles. Ngenhlanhla nganginama-berries ambalwa asefrijini. Ngihlezi nginezihlahlana ze-mint kanye nesihlahla se-holly engadini. Ngangihlelwe ukuthi ngiqambe i-pud emnandi “yezivakashi ezimweni eziphuthumayo” ezinsukwini ezimbalwa ezidlule! (Lawo ma-meringues ahlala isikhathi eside uma egcinwe esitsheni esivala ngci.)

It is said that necessity is the mother of invention! I happened have watched a video on Facebook of a Berry Christmas Wreath. I coincidentally had a tub full of meringues made from leftover egg whites after Sis’ Bongi demonstrated her Portuguese Custard Tartlets. Fortuitously there were a few berries in the fridge.  I always have mint bushes and a holly tree in the garden. I was set up to inspirationally invent a delicious pud for “emergency guests” a few nights ago! (Those meringues last for ages in an airtight container.)


 

Meringues

Yenza amaningi amancane nambalwa amakhulu

Shisisa uhhavini ube ku-120°C

Beka ithireyi lokubhaka elinephepha lokubhaka, elokusonga (wax wrap) noma ngefoyili ethelwe kancane ngofulawa i-corn flour

Meringues

Makes lots of small ones and fewer big ones

Preheat oven to 120 °C

Line a large baking tray with baking paper, wax wrap or tin foil dusted lightly with corn flour


Izithako

1 uketshezi olomhlophe lweqanda

1 inkomishi ye-castor sugar

1 ithisipuni yaviniga omhlophe

2 isipuni (TBSP) samanzi afudumele

1 ithisipuni ye-vanilla essence (uma uthanda)

1 ithisipuni ye-baking powder

Ingredients  

1 egg white

2 cup castor sugar

1 teaspoon white vinegar

1 TBSP warm water

2 teaspoon vanilla essence (optional)

1 teaspoon baking powder

Indlela yokwenza

  1. Faka zonke izithako ngaphandle kwe-baking powder esitsheni sokuhlanganisa bese ukushaya mawala cishe imizuzu emi-5 ize ihlangane yonke inhlanganisela icwebezele futhi ijiye.
  2. Sefa u-baking powder uwuthele phezu kwenhlanganisela bese ukuhlanganisisa (fold in).
  3. Bumba ama-meringues uwabeke ethireyini lokubhaka ngamathisipuni amabili noma uwabumbe nge-piping bag usebenzise i-rosette enkulu noma i-plain nozzle.
  4. Bhaka ihora elilodwa. Cisha uhhavini bese uwayeka ama-meringues ukuze aphole uphinde uwayeke elinye ihora ukuze ome ekuhhavini.
  5. Faka esitsheni esivala ngci kungangeni umoya.
  6. Kuphake no-ice cream nesosi oyithandayo noma kuhlanganise ndawonye njengesemishi kanye nokhilimu nesaladi lezithelo.

Method 

  1. Place all the ingredients except the baking powder in a mixing bowl and beat on high speed for about 5 minutes until mixture is shiny and stiff.
  2. Sift the baking powder over the mixture and fold in thoroughly. 
  3. Shape meringues on the lined baking tray with 2 teaspoons or pipe meringues with a piping bag using a large rosette or plain nozzle. 
  4. Bake for 1 hour. Switch off the oven and allow meringues to cool and dry out in the oven for another hour.  
  5. Store in an airtight container. 
  6. Serve with ice-cream and sauce of choice or sandwiched together with cream alongside fruit salad. 

Amathiphu

  1. Uma ungenayo i-piping bag, sika ikhona laplastiki, ufake inhlanganisela phakathi bese uyiputshuza ibumbeke njengama-meringues.
  2. Ukufaka inhlanganisela kuplastiki noma kwi-pipping bag ngaphandle kokungcolisa, faka uplastiki esitsheni esilingene bese usonga uplastiki ekugcineni kwesitsha.
  3. Uma wenza ama-meringues amhlophe qwa, ungayifaki i-vanilla essence.

Tips

  1. If you don’t have a piping bag, cut the corner of a plastic bag, fill it with mixture and squeeze out into meringues shapes. 
  2. To fill the piping bag or plastic bag with no mess, put the bag in a suitably sized bowl and fold the top of the bag over the edge of the bowl.
  3. For snow white meringues omit the vanilla essence. 

Berry Christmas Wreath

Here’s what I did to get us into the “season to be jolly” mode:

  1. Whip about 2 cups of cream with 1 TBSP icing sugar. 
  2. Draw a 15 - 20 cm circle on a suitably sized glass plate using some of the whipped cream. 
  3. Stick a circle of meringues onto the cream and pile up a few more meringues sticking them together with some more of the whipped cream. Be careful to leave the inner circle open. 
  4. Spoon the remaining cream onto the meringue base and spread evenly.
  5. Decorate with fresh fruit:                                    

You will need:

  • 1 x 500 g punnet fresh strawberries
  • 1 x 125 g punnet raspberries
  • 1 x 125 g punnet blueberries
  • 8 – 10 fresh cherries

Blend 1 punnet of strawberries and set aside. 

Slice the remaining punnet of strawberries in to fine slices. 

Drizzle the blended strawberry sauce over the cream.

Sprinkle the fresh fruit attractively on top of the sauce.

Decorate with a few mint or small holly leaves and ...voila! a magical table centrepiece at dessert time! Pass around and let everyone help themselves to the magic!

Tip

Your pud may not be as bright..try using well drained tinned fruit. 

 

iBerry Wreath yaKhisimusi

Nakhu engakwenza ukuze singene kahle “kuncibijane wobumnandi”:

  1. Shaya izinkomishi ezi-2 zikakhilimu kanye nesipuni (TBSP) sika-icing sugar
  2. Dweba indilinga eyi-15 – 20 cm epuletini lengilazi usebenzise ukhilimu oshayiwe.
  3. Namathisela ama-meringues abe yindilinga phezu kwakhilimu uwafake agcwale ama-meringues uwanamethelise ngokhilimu oshayiwe. Ungakhohlwa ukushiya isikhala esivulekile phakathi nendawo nendilinga.
  4. Faka ngesipuni ukhilimu osele kwi-meringue base bese uyifaka indlaleke ngokulingana.
  5. Hlobisa ngezithelo ezintsha:

Uzodinga:

  •     1 x 500g isitsha sama-strawberries
  •     1 x 125g isitsha sama-raspberries
  •     1 x 125g isitsha sama-blueberries
  •     8 – 10 ama-cherries amasha

Bhlenda 1 isitsha wama-strawberries bese ubeka eceleni.

Sika izingcezu izitsha wama-strawberries asele uwenze izingcezu ezincane.

Thela i-strawberry sauce ebhlendiwe phezu kwakhilimu.

Vuvuzela kahle izithelo ezifreshi phezu kwesosi.

Hlobisa ngeminti embalwa noma ngamaqabunga e-holly uzobona umsebenzi omuhle! Umsebenzi okhangayo obekwa phakathi nendawo etafuleni ngesikhathi sedizethi! Yidlulise kuwo wonke umuntu azizwele ubumnandi!
