A magnificent alternative to roast potatoes because they are quick, simple, crunchy and delicious – all the things we expect from our roast potatoes!

Serves 4 – 8

Preheat oven to 200°C

Grease a shallow, medium-sized baking dish or roasting pan


Izithako 

6 - 8 amazambane angemakhulu kakhulu angacwecwiwe anezikhumba zawo 

1 inkomishi yebhotela noma imajarini (noma ½ inkomishi yebhotela noma imajarini kanye no-½ wenkomishi yamafutha)

1 iphakethe (50g) isobho lika-anyanisi eliyimphuphu elinsundu noma elimhloph  

Ingredients

6 - 8 medium potatoes in their jackets

1 cup butter or margarine (or ½ cup butter or margarine and ½ cup oil)

1 packet (50g) brown or white onion soup powder

Indlela yokwenza

  1. Bilisa amazambane anezikhumba zawo aze athambe. 
  2. Wasike kodwa ungafiki phansi, abe yizincezu ezingama-2 mm. Wahlele esitsheni sokubhaka, izincezu zibheke phezulu. Kubeke eceleni.
  3. Ncibilikisa ibhotela bese uthela isobho eliyimpuphu ulokhu ugovuza.
  4. Thululela uhhafu wesosi yebhotela uyigcobe kahle emazambaneni, kufake kuhhavini. 
  5. Bhaka kungamboziwe imizuzu engama-60 noma ngaphezulu kuze kube nsundwana kuhlofozele, ube ulokhu uthela isosi yebhotela esalile ngaphezulu. 

Method

  1. Boil the potatoes in their jackets until almost soft. 
  2. Without cutting right through to the base, slice the potatoes into 2 mm slices. Place in the shallow baking dish, sliced side up. Set aside.
  3. Melt the butter and stir in the soup powder.
  4. Spoon half of the butter sauce evenly over the potatoes and place in oven.
  5. Bake uncovered for 60 minutes or longer until brown and crispy, basting occasionally with the rest of the butter sauce.
